The American multinational company IBM (International Business Machine Corporation) has been in first place for the last 29 years in terms of the number of patents registered in the US. However, in the year 2022, finally, a manufacturer overtook IBM, which is none other than the invincible market leader Samsung. With the highest number of utility patents registered in the US in 2022, the South Korean conglomerate has reached first place.

According to the reports, in 2022, the first ranker Samsung filed a total of 8,513 utility patents on its name, which is approximately similar to its previous year’s total registered patents. While coming to IBM, it saw a considerable decline of 44% and ended up filing only 4,743 patents, which undoubtedly impacted its marketability. After these, LG comes in third place with a 5% augmentation in patent registration.

Dario Gil, the research head of IBM, has stated in that manner, “We decided to pursue numeric patent leadership no longer, but remain an intellectual property powerhouse and continue to have one of the strongest portfolios in the world in our priority technologies,” the officials also shared that they gained a magnificent profit from 1996 to 2022 through the intellectual property rights, which is nearly 27 billion USD.

This huge relapse in the quantity of IBM’s patent registration may have been seen due to the lower number of semiconductors and hardware memory patents, which knocked IBM down to second place and broke its three-decade first rank holder record. On the other hand, Samsung has made it to first place and overtook IBM; it is clear that the company is seamlessly working hard to be the best of the best in the tech world.
