Samsung has preplanned the updates for its Galaxy devices; for the last few years, companies have followed the five-year software updates to the flagship devices, which include three Android updates and five-year security updates. But in early 2022 company came with some new addition and updated the Android version policy and up to four security updates.

Samsung, Galaxy devices are eligible to get four and three years of OS updates based on their category. Informatively, the Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra devices, which are currently running on Android 13 and One UI 5, are eligible to get a total of three major OS updates. As these devices were launched with Android 10, they are eligible to get up to Android 13 only. But this will not happen with the Galaxy S21 and S21 FE devices.

So the devices which are launched after the policy change are automatically joined by the four Android update policies. The company has also shared a list of devices:

  • Galaxy Z Series: Galaxy Z Fold3, Galaxy Z Flip3, and upcoming Z series devices
  • Galaxy A Series: upcoming select A series devices

With this policy update, the company has also mentioned some previous year’s devices as well. Which clearly gets an additional one-year benefit.

The Galaxy S21 series was released back in 2021 with Android 11; previously, the device was only eligible for receiving updates up to Android 14, but with the policy update, Samsung will give Android updates up to Android 15. The Galaxy S21 FE will get more advantages, as it was released one year later the main series with Android 12, so it will get new Android versions up to Android 16.
