Samsung is in the news for its new $1.9 billion investment in its semiconductor chip plant in Austin, Texas, which seems to be the initiative for the mass production of camera sensors for Apple.
It’s already been revealed that Samsung has been ordered to supply camera sensors to Apple for the future iPhones. Now, a new report from MoneyToday Korea revealed that Samsung Electronics is looking forward to taking a major step by investing around $1.9 billion in its foundry fab in Austin, Texas, USA.
According to the report, this investment will be used to remodel the facility by adding cutting-edge semiconductor chipmaking equipment. It will be significant for the company to make advanced semiconductor chips. One of the most notable facts is that the chips could be the same CMOS image sensor (CIS) chips that Apple mentioned in its deal with Samsung.
However, Samsung and Apple haven’t revealed the exact details of the camera sensor for which they are collaborating. Previous reports revealed that it could be a 1/2.6-inch ultrawide camera sensor, which Apple can use for its next-generation iPhone 18 and future iPhone models.
It’s expected that Apple could order enough units of camera sensors from Samsung, which could be produced at Samsung’s chip plant in Austin. Since the official statement regarding this new investment has yet to be released, it remains to be seen whether the report comes true, and if possible, then how beneficial would this major investment be for the firm?
