Samsung is now working on a variable aperture technology in its smartphone cameras to bring advanced capturing capabilities.
Transparently, Samsung is one of the leading brands in the tech market in terms of smartphone camera technology. Now, under the hood, it is testing variable aperture technology in its smartphone cameras.
In case you missed it, initially, the company introduced the variable aperture technology with the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S10 models, which allowed the camera to switch between a wide f/1.5 aperture and a narrower f/2.4 aperture seamlessly. This technology is convenient in a few scenes, such as talking shots in low light.
A few years later, the company removed the variable aperture, starting with the Galaxy S20, as it shifted its focus to higher-resolution sensors and cutting-edge software-based image enhancement. However, another reason behind this is avoiding higher costs and thicker cameras.
Meanwhile, on the rivalry side, Apple is now reported to bring variable aperture to the iPhone 18 Pro models, which could force Samsung to reconsider the technology. A new report from Digital Chat Station (via) revealed that the Korean tech giant is testing variable aperture for its future Galaxy phones in preparation for the 2026 iPhone.
However, the tipster hasn’t mentioned any specific Galaxy device name with which Samsung will bring back the variable aperture technology in the future. But a few months ago, it was reported that Samsung could bring back Variable Aperture with the Galaxy S27 Ultra.
