Samsung Galaxy S25 Gets New Update and a Surprise for Underwater Photography

Security updates rarely generate excitement. But Samsung’s April 2026 rollout for the Galaxy S25 lineup comes with something unexpected tucked inside.

The update is hitting all five devices in the current flagship family: the S25, S25+, S25 Ultra, S25 Edge, and S25 FE. Firmware versions vary by device, but they’re all pushing out of South Korea first with the April 2026 security patch on board.

The patch itself addresses 43 vulnerabilities in total. Thirty-three fall under the broader Android category, while the remaining ten are Samsung-specific fixes covering One UI and related software. Fourteen of those are classified as critical severity, which puts this month’s update above average in terms of how serious the patched flaws were. Standard advice applies: install it when you’re prompted.

Ocean Mode Makes Its Way to the S25 Ultra

The more interesting news involves Expert RAW. Version 5.0.08.2 is rolling out now and brings Ocean Mode to the Galaxy S25 Ultra. The feature was originally built for the Galaxy S24 Ultra, but it only became widely available when the S26 launched. Now S25 Ultra owners are getting access to it too.

The thinking behind Ocean Mode is practical rather than gimmicky. Underwater photography has two persistent problems: motion blur caused by water movement and divers, and color distortion because water absorbs red and orange wavelengths, which pushes images toward blue. Ocean Mode addresses both, improving white balance and reducing blur to produce more accurate and usable underwater photos.

It was initially developed to support coral reef restoration work, where image quality directly affects how researchers document and evaluate reef health. That context gives it a purpose beyond filters and marketing.

One important clarification: Ocean Mode is a camera feature. It improves what the lens captures. It does nothing for the phone’s physical water resistance. The S25 Ultra carries an IP68 rating, but that applies to fresh water under controlled conditions. Saltwater use is a different matter entirely, and a waterproof case remains the sensible choice if you’re actually diving.

Whether Ocean Mode will stay exclusive to the S25 Ultra or reach other devices isn’t confirmed yet.

One UI 8.5 Still in Beta

For owners waiting on the stable One UI 8.5 update based on Android 16, the timeline remains unofficial. Rumors point to a late April or early May release, but Samsung hasn’t confirmed anything. The beta program is available in the meantime.

To check for the security update, go to Settings, then Software Update, then Download and Install. For the Expert RAW update, open Galaxy Store and check for updates there.
