Kingdom Hearts 4 finally has a release window after years of near-silence. Square Enix confirmed during D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in August 2026 that the next mainline entry will launch in late 2027, arriving on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and the Microsoft Store. The announcement landed alongside a new trailer confirming Pixar’s Coco as a playable world.

The game was first revealed back on April 10, 2022, during the Kingdom Hearts 20th Anniversary event, giving fans their first glimpse of an older Sora and the mysterious city of Quadratum. Updates were scarce for years afterward, making this year’s string of reveals a significant shift after a long stretch of relative quiet.

The story follows Sora as he journeys through Quadratum, a Tokyo-inspired city where dark creatures called Heartless cause chaos. Series director Tetsuya Nomura has described the game’s central theme as the contrast between the people of Sora’s original world believing Quadratum’s inhabitants are fictional, and Quadratum’s own people believing the same thing in reverse.

Momentum built steadily through 2026. A Nintendo Direct in June gave fans their first real gameplay look at the title, confirming its full platform lineup. Then, at D23 in August, Square Enix revealed Coco as the game’s first confirmed Disney or Pixar world, a striking departure from Quadratum’s atmosphere thanks to the Land of the Dead’s vibrant, colorful setting. A separate Deep Dive panel at the same event showed off an extended four-minute gameplay trailer featuring playable segments starring Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy.

The road to this point wasn’t entirely smooth. Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, a mobile game originally announced alongside the sequel in 2022, was intended to connect narratively to the mainline story, with certain characters in Missing-Link tied directly to it. Square Enix canceled Missing-Link in May 2025, but used the announcement to reaffirm that its team remained “hard at work” on the mainline title. Nomura followed up in September 2025, stating the game was “progressing well and according to schedule.”

Nomura has also said he chose to prioritize this project as his next major console game specifically because developing two large console titles simultaneously would have been too difficult to manage. The 2027 release window carries extra significance beyond just ending the wait: it lines up with the Kingdom Hearts franchise’s 25th anniversary, which Square Enix marked with a dedicated anniversary logo revealed alongside the game’s platform confirmations.

Nearly five years between initial announcement and a confirmed release window is an unusually long gap even by Kingdom Hearts standards, a series already known for lengthy waits between mainline entries. That the wait is now measured in months rather than remaining an open question is a meaningful shift, giving fans an actual finish line for the first time since 2022.

The Coco reveal also signals Square Enix is willing to pull from Disney and Pixar’s more recent, culturally specific catalog rather than leaning solely on classic, universally recognized properties the series has favored in the past. That’s a notable creative choice, and it raises real questions about which other modern films might make an appearance before launch.
