Blizzard Announces New StarCraft Game for Spring 2030

Blizzard has a new StarCraft game, and it is not another real-time strategy sequel. Revealed at the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony on September 12, the project is titled only STARCRAFT. It is an original open-world, story-driven shooter set for spring 2030. The reveal was a three-minute cinematic called Dominion. There was no gameplay.

Dan Hay, a former Far Cry producer now serving as StarCraft’s general manager and creative director, introduced it as a game played on the ground, “in the mud, in the fire,” not from the commander’s chair. Blizzard’s line on the site is the same one Hay used on stage: it’s about damn time.

StarCraft Game – What We Know

The last original numbered campaign in the series was StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void in 2015. StarCraft Remastered followed in 2017. Paid StarCraft II development wound down years ago. This is the first new standalone StarCraft game in about a decade, and the first time Blizzard is officially leaving RTS for a full product instead of a cancelled side project.

The story jumps 70 years after Legacy of the Void and stays in the Koprulu Sector. Hay has said the campaign is told from the Terran side. Players create and name a character, then follow that soldier through a story with a beginning, middle, and end. Blizzard has already said this is not a live-service replacement for Destiny 2. Think a boxed, finite campaign in a living world, with gear and skill upgrades, not a seasonal grind.

The Dominion trailer follows a Terran recruit named Holt through training and into a Zerg meat grinder. The voiceover is Dominion propaganda. Holt does not walk out. Protoss appear only as atmosphere. Platforms have not been named. First-person versus third-person is still being reported both ways. No maps, guns, or multiplayer modes have been shown.

Hay told interviewers the team shifted perspective on purpose. StarCraft used to be about building units. This time you are the unit. He also said they announced early, about a year after the tone felt solid, so they could collect feedback across the long wait to 2030.

This is not StarCraft: Ghost. Ghost was the third-person stealth shooter Blizzard announced in the early 2000s and cancelled in 2006. The new game is a separate project under Hay, with a later timeline and an open world.

What This Means for Fans

RTS players who wanted StarCraft III did not get it. What they got is a genre change with the old name on the box. That will split the room. The setting still has Terrans, Zerg, and the ugly frontier tone that made the originals work. A closed story is the other piece of good news. Blizzard is not asking anyone to subscribe to the Koprulu Sector for ten years.

The risk is the calendar. Spring 2030 is four years out, with no gameplay in public. Ghost already proved a StarCraft shooter can die in development. Hay saying a date keeps the team honest is a promise, not a build.

What’s Next

Blizzard says more will come over the coming years: gameplay, world deep-dives, and platform details. Fans can register for updates at StarCraft.com. Until a playable slice exists, the file stays thin: open-world shooter, Terran story, 70 years after Legacy of the Void, spring 2030, not live service.
