Naruto Gets New “Limited” TV Anime Series, Full Reveal Set for NYCC

Naruto is coming back to television. Viz Media announced Monday that the Naruto franchise is getting a new “limited” TV anime series, with full details set to drop at a dedicated panel during New York Comic Con on October 10.

The confirmation clarifies weeks of speculation. Earlier reports out of Variety and other outlets in September pointed toward a new animated movie, but Viz Media’s official announcement specifically describes a limited television series rather than a film.

What’s Happening at NYCC

The “NARUTO: What’s Next?” panel is scheduled for October 10 at 5:00 p.m., timed to land on Naruto Uzumaki’s own birthday. The panel will stream live worldwide on YouTube, so fans outside New York won’t need a con badge to watch the reveal.

Junko Takeuchi and Noriaki Sugiyama, the Japanese voice actors behind Naruto and Sasuke, are confirmed to appear alongside Pierrot Films executive producer Yoshihiro Tominaga. Their presence suggests Viz Media is treating this as a major franchise moment rather than a minor announcement, and it lines up with growing confirmation that Naruto is set to appear at Jump Festa’s Super Stage Red event in December as well.

Nine Years Since the Anime Ended

The original Naruto anime and its sequel, Naruto: Shippuden, wrapped up in 2017, nine years before this announcement. Masashi Kishimoto’s manga ran in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump from 1999 to November 2014, and the franchise has continued since through the Boruto sequel manga and anime, films, novels, stage plays, and games.

This new project also follows years of uncertainty around a separate set of anniversary episodes. Studio Pierrot announced four special episodes back in 2022 for Naruto’s 20th anniversary, originally planned for a 2023 release, but the episodes were delayed indefinitely and haven’t surfaced since. It’s not yet clear whether Monday’s “limited series” announcement is connected to those long-delayed episodes or represents an entirely separate project. That distinction should become clear once the October 10 panel breaks down what’s actually coming.
