God of War Laufey Delay Confirmed: PS5 Release Moves to May 20, 2027

God of War Laufey is delayed. Santa Monica Studio announced on November 4, 2026, that the PS5 exclusive will now release on May 20, 2027, about three months after its original February 16 date. Geoff Keighley and multiple outlets confirmed the new date.

The studio said it will use the extra time on finishing touches and to push the game to its fullest potential. Its statement thanked fans for their excitement since the June reveal but gave no specific reason for the move.

What Santa Monica Studio Said

The announcement came through the studio’s social media accounts. It acknowledged the response to Faye’s journey through the Everywhen and said the team wants to deliver an experience worthy of the fans’ passion. Like most big-budget delays, the statement didn’t name specific problems, which usually signals polish rather than a development setback.

Laufey was revealed at a State of Play in June, and the February 2027 date was confirmed in late July. The studio also confirmed a physical disc release in July.

Why May May Be a Smarter Window

The new date moves Laufey away from a crowded early 2027. Sony’s own Until Dawn 2 launches January 28, and PlayStation typically releases its annual MLB The Show in March. A May launch gives the game room to breathe from both and from the heavy first-quarter slate of other publishers.

The Game and Its Reception

Laufey stars Faye, Kratos’s late wife and Atreus’s mother, who awakens in the Everywhen, a realm for gods and demigods from many pantheons. She fights creatures from different mythologies alongside a talking gelatinous cube and a talking sword sash. The game is the first mainline entry in the series where Kratos isn’t the lead, and Santa Monica’s Cory Barlog has said a Kratos-led game is also in development and will tie directly to Laufey.

The reveal split the fanbase. Some players criticized the lighter tone, the cube companion, and Kratos’s removal from the lead, according to coverage of the reaction. Others welcomed a new protagonist, and the studio’s later Serpent’s Bow reveal and September 29 pre-order opening drew more positive attention.

The delay lands five months after the reveal. Pre-orders have been live since September 29.
