Samsung Electronics Sued For Patent Infringement In The US

A former company employee has sued Samsung Electronics and Samsung Electronics America for patent infringement regarding smartphones in the United States.

The lawsuit was filed by a former employee Kim Seung-man in the District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, which claims that Samsung and Samsung Electronics America violated seven of his patents when implementing the Smart Lock feature on their smartphones starting in 2015.

Smart Lock unlocks that phone when the user is in a reliable area, connected to a reliable device, or detects certain gestures.

Kim worked at Samsung’s patent team from the 1980s to the late 1990s. According to the information, he is considered a member of the first generation of the patent team the South Korean tech giant.

At Samsung, he dealt with patent disputes with Japanese businesses. He relocated to the US in the 2000s after leaving the business, where he registered his patents. Kim contends in his lawsuit that he has more than 30 years of experience as an engineer and a technology expert and asserts that he is the creator of the patents. According to the reports, he had previously sued Samsung for patent infringement but had already lost that case.
