Carrier-locked Galaxy S21 FE December 2022 security update in the US

As usual, Samsung once again brings a new update for the Fan Edition of the Galaxy S21 device, while the original series already received the December 2022 security update a few days ago. It is also noticeable that the preceding device, i.e., Galaxy S21 FE Verizon unit, has also received the latest security update.

According to the information, the December 2022 security update is now available for the carrier-locked variant of the device on Xfinity Mobile’s network. It comes with firmware version number G990USQS4DVL1; we guess that the update will be available on the other networks in the next few days.

The December 2022 security patch update brings several fixes which resolve around 93 security vulnerabilities. The update also includes some improvements that enhance the overall performance and stability of the device.

According to the Samsung documentation, the latest patches include the fix to as many as 93 vulnerabilities

, 67 of them common to (almost) all Android devices. Of the long list, 5 vulnerabilities are defined as critical, 63 high priority, and 12 moderate. Most of these vulnerabilities affect Galaxy smartphones and tablets with Android 10, Android 11, and Android 12, but some also touch the latest version of the robot. Among the latter, one concerns the RCS system, which would allow malicious actors to access the phone number of an incoming call. It also required action on the vulnerability that would allow access to the contents of the toast notifications of the Personal Area through the Nice Catch app (it is part of the Good Lock package).

The Galaxy S21 FE device was launched in 2022, approximately one year after the main series, which includes the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, and Galaxy S21 Ultra. The fan edition of the Galaxy S21 comes with Android 12 and recently upgraded to Android 13 One UI 5.0. As the device launched after the official announcement of Samsung giving four Android updates to its Galaxy devices, so we can expect that the device will get three more Android OS updates in future.
