Samsung to develop its own GPU, Will it beat Adreno or Apple’s

Graphics Processing Unit or we can say GPU is a special electronic circuit that was originally designed to accelerate graphics rendering; in other words, GPU is an important element in a processor. The South Korean tech firm intends to develop its own GPU for its Exynos chipset lineup. In order to make it possible, Samsung might take the base of one of AMD’s architectures. Now, let’s learn more about Samsung’s self-made GPUs.

Informatively, as of now, Samsung has used ARM’s Mali GPUs in their Exynos chips, but now they are planning for their own GPUs now. As per the reports, the Korean firm’s Exynos 2200 SoC has the Xclipse 920 GPU, which is a result of Samsung’s partnership with AMD; in specific, the GPU was based on AMD’s RDNA 2 architecture. Now it is being said that Samsung’s self-made GPU will also be based on the same architecture. 

However, we are unsure whether it will be completely standalone or not, but it might be a possibility for Samsung to get AMD’s help in terms of the self-made GPU’s IP. Let us tell you, it is something that Apple also does with the help of Qualcomm, and now Samsung is joining the league too. It is undeniable that ARM’s Mali GPUs were also doing great, but having a custom and own GPU will surely benefit Samsung and their users both.

Now an obvious question appears, whether Samsung’s custom chipset will overpower Apple or Adreno’s GPU or not. It won’t be wrong to say that Samsung’s chipsets have given it a hard time, and consequently, they have abandoned using Exynos chips in its Galaxy S23 flagship. It will be good for Samsung if they take their time and come up with a profitable indigenous chip with the ability to deliver outstanding performance. 

At present, Samsung is working on its Exynos 2300 chipset, which may use Xclipse 930 GPU. It is being said that this chipset will be the base of Google Tensor G3, which means we may get it to see in Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro devices. It will be really interesting to see what this new chipset will bring with it and whether it will be able to stand against Apple and Qualcomm’s GPUs.
