Samsung with Vodafone & Orange complete 4G calls over shared Open RAN in Romania
In a trial initiative, Samsung Electronics, Vodafone, and Orange, two of Europe’s leading carriers, announced the completion of the first 4G calls across shared commercial networks in rural parts of Romania using Open RAN. Vodafone and Orange stated earlier this year that they would be testing Open RAN with RAN sharing across Europe. The two operators may benefit from the Open RAN ecosystem’s improved flexibility and innovation by adopting Samsung’s virtualized Radio Access Network (vRAN). RAN sharing lowers hardware costs, energy usage, and the requirement for duplicate locations by allowing network component to be shared.
RAN sharing will contribute to the widespread adoption of open RAN in Europe. After the successful integration testing at Orange’s Open RAN lab in France and Vodafone’s UK’s Open RAN development, Samsung contributed multi-RAT vRAN software as well as Open RAN-compliant radios for this endeavor. Both operators have already accomplished successful 4G calls through their pilot project and will shortly include 2G, which has previously been successfully tested in the lab, and subsequently 5G. It will be Europe’s first time that 2G will be completely integrated into a commercial open-RAN sharing environment.
