Some reductions are the height of achievements! It’s the true case for Samsung, as it has reduced 48% thickness from the initial Galaxy Fold to the newly launched Galaxy Z Fold 7. Let’s take a closer look at the journey behind a 48% reduction in thickness.
Recently, at the Galaxy Unpacked event on July 9, Samsung launched the latest Galaxy Z Fold 7, which measures 8.9 mm in thickness, making it 48% thinner than the original Galaxy Fold.
A few years back, in 2019, Samsung inaugurated the foldable phone lineup by debuting the original ‘Galaxy Fold,’ which was 17.1 mm thick. Each year, the company introduced an upgraded version of the original model with reduced thickness, more advanced features & software, and great specifications.
Samsung’s New Foldable Is Slimmer Than Ever—Here’s How
To date, Samsung has launched seven foldable phones with different thicknesses each year since 2019, respectively, which are as follows:
- Galaxy Fold—It is 17.1 mm thick while folded & 7.6 mm while unfolded
- Galaxy Z Fold 2—It is 16.8 mm thick when folded & 6.9 mm thick when unfolded and features the Hideaway Hinge, consisting of at least 60 internal components for seamless folding.
- Galaxy Z Fold 3—It is 16 mm thick when folded & 6.4 mm when unfolded, built by Armor Aluminum to boost durability, and features upgraded Sweeper technology to prevent the hinge from dust particles.
- Galaxy Z Fold 4—It is 15.8 mm thick while folded and 6.3 mm thick while unfolded and has a linear movement mechanism hinge that helps to reduce thickness.
- Galaxy Z Fold 5—The thickness is reduced to 13.4 mm when folded and 6.1 mm when unfolded, with a Flex Hinge based on an innovative hinge mechanism coupled with four drive shafts that enabled the display to curl inward in a water drop shape.
- Galaxy Watch 6—It features a symmetrical dual rail hinge that enables the device to fold flat or open at several angles between 75 and 115 degrees, resulting in 12.1 mm thickness when folded and 5.6 mm when unfolded.
- Galaxy Z Fold 7—It crosses the heights of slimness, as it is just 8.9 mm thick when folded and 4.2 mm thick when unfolded, thanks to its Armor Flex Hinge.

With each foldable phone, Samsung has reduced the thickness by a particular percentage. Overall thickness declined by 29% across the first six generations, from the Galaxy Fold to the Galaxy Z Fold 6, whereas a significant 26% reduction was achieved in just the past year.

This is being made possible due to the continued advancements of the company in hinge engineering and product design, delivering a more refined user experience.
