Samsung Aims for Timely One UI Software Releases, following Google’s Trunk stable model

Samsung’s One UI 8 is indeed rapidly moving towards its stability stage and is already showing some impressive progress; it looks like Samsung has not repeated the mistakes that happened with One UI 7. Now, the fast progress of One UI 8 is due to the most significant factor that is applied by Google, and for the first time, Samsung will be adopting it.

Just in! According to the report presented by Android Authority, the reason behind One UI 8’s fast progress is being revealed, and it’s impressive.

Samsung Embraces Trunk Stable Development for Timelier One UI Rollouts

The report mentions that for years, Samsung has lagged behind Google in speedy updates of its Galaxy devices, but with the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 models, Samsung easily managed to release Android 16-based One UI 8 faster, and this was made possible by adopting Google’s new Trunk Stable development model.

From separate branches of versions to a single core development:

Samsung has made a significant shift with One UI 8 by using the latest Trunk Stable development criteria, where instead of creating separate branches of new versions, all the One UI developments will now happen on a single, stable codebase, while all the features will be hidden behind different flags until they are completely ready to be released.

Basically, Google has followed a tradition of developing Android using a branch-based model, where it needed to create a separate branch of code and then add features, and by that time, the development remained frozen.

This is then followed by merging of the branch back into Android’s main internal development branch. However, this merging leads to “merge conflicts,” where the development becomes prone to bugs and inconsistencies, consuming more time to fix and release the update.

Thankfully, Google then approached a new Trunk Stable development model, which helps Google to avoid time consumption and allows Google to release Android versions much faster.

Well, Samsung credits Google’s new Trunk Stable development model, due to which it could bring One UI 8 to market much faster right after Google launches Android 16. It’s impressive how Samsung managed to bring out its latest One UI 8 version, and if this consistency is continued, then Galaxy owners will witness more quick update execution and match Google’s release timeframe in order to bring the new OS version as early as possible.
