Qualcomm is working on two high-end chipsets to launch this year: the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 and the rumored Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. Let’s take a closer look at the report.
Under the hood, Qualcomm is developing the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chipset, which will also be a flagship-level processor but is expected to be positioned slightly below the 8 Elite 2, possibly for “flagship killer” devices.
Qualcomm Preparing Dual Flagship Chipset Launch in Coming Months
A new report from a reliable tipster, Digital Chat Station on Weibo, revealed that there is also a processor in the pipeline that could arrive on the market under the name of Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, confirming recent rumors.
Reportedly, the tipster spotted a chipset codenamed SM8845, which is supposed to be called the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. Noticeably, it is not an iteration of the previous generation chipsets, such as the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4, nor a rebrand of another 8s-series chip.
According to the report, it seems that Qualcomm could use this CPU in flagship models within the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 series and is expected to be based on TSMC’s N3P process, the same one used for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite 2.
It’s expected that this chip could be powered by Qualcomm’s Oryon CPU. However, it will be interesting to see whether there will be any difference compared to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite (generations 1 and 2). The chipset is expected to support the SME, which stands for “Scalable Matrix Extension,” an instruction set for on-device AI acceleration.
According to the report, most of the Android brands are considering integrating Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 into their flagship models, potentially the “Base” variants, while the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 chip could be used in the “Pro” and “Ultra” models.
It will be interesting to see whether Samsung will go for the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 or the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 for its next-generation Galaxy S26 series.
