Samsung unveils a new 200MP ISOCELL HP5 sensor

Samsung announced a “new milestone in pixel innovation” with its ISOCELL HP5 mobile sensor to strengthen its position in the mobile camera market.

The company introduces its latest 200MP unit, which packs 200 million pixels, each measuring 0.5 µm, into a 1/1.56-inch optical format. It’s highly anticipated that this advancement is expected to efficiently enhance photo and video quality across all lighting conditions.

The newly launched sensor goes beyond high resolution and delivers superior shots, from extended wide-angle shots to crystal-clear telephoto zooms. Samsung equipped the sensor with several key features and notable technologies, such as an effective resolution of 16,384 x 12,288 pixels (200 megapixels), 8K video recording at 30 fps, 4K at 120 fps, and Full HD at 480 fps support, 10-bit ADC accuracy, HDR Smart-ISO Pro, and a 1/1.56-inch optical format.

Samsung offered a notable feature to the sensor called Tetra pixel technology for optimizing pixel arrangement based on lighting conditions; for instance, in dark scenarios, the ISOCELL HP5 sensor automatically merges adjacent pixels to capture more light, operating at 50MP with 1.0 µm pixels or 12.5 megapixels (with 2.0 µm pixels). It also enables 2x zoom directly at the sensor level, which helps to maintain high image quality.

The DDC technology is a specialized structure that enhances both autofocus and noise reduction. Samsung has designed the sensor in a way that helps to achieve a 150% increase in conversion gain and a 3% to 40% reduction in random noise compared to conventional designs. While the Smart-ISO Pro technology enables 13-bit color depth, it is compatible with expressing over 550 billion color combinations. The staggered HDR technology captures each image line by line at multiple exposures, including long, medium, and short.
