Samsung Internet Receives a Smart Upgrade in One UI 8.5

Samsung’s browser update for One UI 8.5 just solved a problem that should never have existed in the first place.

The latest version (29.0.2.76) moves the “new tab” button from the top-right corner down to the bottom-right, where your thumb actually lives when holding a phone. It’s a small change that makes a real difference, especially on devices that keep getting bigger. (Via – Tarun Vats)

Here’s the odd part: this repositioning only applies to the One UI 8.5 beta, currently available on the Galaxy S25 series. If you’re running the stable One UI 8 release, the button already sits at the bottom. So Samsung fixed it, then unfixed it, and is now fixing it again.

The update is rolling out through the Galaxy Store. Navigate to Menu, tap Updates, then hit Update All if you’re on the beta.

Reaching the top corner of a 6.7-inch display with one hand requires either a hand shuffle or uncommitted finger gymnastics. Moving frequently used controls to thumb-friendly zones isn’t revolutionary—it’s basic ergonomics that Apple figured out years ago and Android manufacturers keep forgetting.

Samsung deserves credit for correcting course, but the fact that this needed correcting at all raises questions about their testing process. Did no one actually use the browser during development?

The update may include other tweaks, though nothing else stands out yet. For now, Galaxy S25 beta users get what should have been the default: a browser button they can actually reach without adjusting their grip.

Sometimes good design just means putting things where hands can find them.
