Software features are only as good as their implementation, and Samsung is finding that out the hard way with the Galaxy S25 Ultra.
A user on Samsung’s official forum flagged a malfunction in the Virtual Aperture feature after updating the Expert RAW app. The issue is specific but noticeable: Virtual Aperture works correctly at 1x and 3x zoom, but at 5x the subject separation breaks down. The foreground and background do not separate cleanly, which defeats the entire purpose of the feature.
Virtual Aperture, for context, simulates a variable aperture system to manipulate depth of field in software. It was a headline addition on the Galaxy S26 Ultra and has since been ported back to the S25 Ultra as part of Samsung’s broader push to keep its older flagships relevant through software updates rather than hardware refreshes.
Samsung responded quickly. A forum moderator acknowledged the bug, confirmed it was reproduced in internal testing, and flagged it as significant enough to warrant a dedicated fix. That fix is planned to arrive as part of the One UI 8.5 FOTA update for the Galaxy S25 series, currently expected sometime between late April and early May.
The quick acknowledgment is worth crediting. Samsung does not always move this fast on user-reported issues.
That said, the situation does underscore a recurring tension in the company’s current strategy. Backporting software features to older hardware sounds like good value for existing users, but it introduces compatibility variables that do not always get caught before release. A bug at a specific zoom level is not catastrophic, but it is the kind of rough edge that erodes confidence in feature rollouts.
