Samsung Electronics Launches Gen 2 SSD Drive

Samsung Electronics launched the second generation of SSD; it would be an improvement over the previous generation by reducing processing time by more than half, energy consumption by up to 70%, and CPU utilization by up to 97%. Compared to conventional SSD drives, it reduces processing time by more than half, energy consumption by up to 70%, and CPU utilization by up to 97%.

The SmartSSD processes data stored on the hard drive itself. Programs saved to your PC do not have to slow down when transferred to your CPU to run. Graphics can be produced directly from the drive, freeing up GPU cores.

Development Process:

Data processing functionality is built into a high-performance SSD in the new proprietary computational storage. Samsung Electronics has successfully developed the second generation of its innovative SmartSSD. Data can be processed directly by Samsung’s SmartSSD. Unlike present SSDs, it minimizes data transfers between the CPU, GPU, and RAM. With this technology, data transfer bottlenecks between storage and CPUs can be avoided, greatly enhancing system performance and energy efficiency. A bottleneck occurs when one of the components cannot perform due to the restricted capabilities of the other, hence doesn’t reach the top performance or the highest threshold.

Applications:

Next-Gen tech like AI, ML & 5G/6G requires this fast computational power. Video communications platform providers & IT companies are the primary users of this type of tech, and AMD

partnered with Samsung to develop this tech. This type of SSDs is made by receiving the customer input and using the 3rd party software. Compared to traditional data centre solid-state drives, the processing time for scan-heavy database queries can be reduced by more than 50%, energy consumption by up to 70%, and CPU utilization by up to 97%.

The Future:

Samsung Official talked about how the second generation Samsung SmartSSD improves CPU efficiency and reduces energy consumption by integrating computing and storage functions in data centres, i.e. by matching to the current industry standards and keeping the tech updated with the application of cutting-edge technology constant innovations.

“Commercializing the first-generation SmartSSD, in collaboration with AMD, established that the computational storage market has great potential.” He added, “With the upgraded processing functionality of the second-generation SmartSSD, Samsung will be able to easily address increasing customer needs in the database and video transcoding sectors as we expand the boundaries of the next-generation storage market.”
