Samsung Works on Continuous Camera Zoom Lens: Galaxy Smartphone Implementation Likely?

Samsung Electronics is developing a continuous zoom system for the telephoto lens to enhance users’ photography experience, as it will allow them to zoom smoothly across a wider magnification range with supreme quality.

A new report from the reliable blog, TheElec, revealed that under the hood, Samsung is working on a continuous zoom for Xiaomi and other smartphone brands. The reason behind targeting Xiaomi as the first contender to use this system first is that Chinese smartphone manufacturers often embrace new, untested camera technologies faster as compared to Appleand Samsung.

In case the technology turns out to be successful, then it could appear on Galaxy phones. The underdeveloped continuous zoom technology splits the lenses in a telephoto camera into two or more groups. Reportedly, a few of these lens groups move to change the focal length seamlessly to deliver sharp photos at any zoom level.

However, the regular zoom cameras have fixed lenses, which will provide optical zoom at certain steps, such as 5x or 10x. If you zoom in between these steps, the camera uses digital zoom, meaning you get a lower-quality image. Noticeably, if you zoom in between these steps, the camera uses digital zoom, which results in a lower-quality image.

It seems that continuous zoom could bring a revolution to smartphone cameras, but Samsung’s MX division will unlikely adopt it in its present form, since currently, it is focusing on making the smartphone as slim as possible while offering powerful features. The continuous zoom system for the telephoto camera could make the module thicker, affecting the phone’s slim design. Since there’s no official statement regarding this report yet, it remains to be seen what will happen next.
