Samsung Display & BOE mutually decide to drop OLED lawsuits

Samsung Display and BOE have finally decided to come to a consensus after a long and complicated legal fight regarding OLED display technology.

Samsung Display was the one who initiated the fight in 2022 by filing a complaint with the US International Trade Commission (ITC), claiming that BOE had infringed its OLED patents. However, a year later, in October 2023, the company accused BOE of stealing trade secrets by hiring employees who had access to confidential OED technology, and since then to now the legal battle has carried on.

Meanwhile, a new report revealed that both of these firms came to a mutual belief that fair competition is more crucial for the display industry and decided to drop all ongoing lawsuits worldwide. However, Samsung did not comment on reports that BOE might pay royalties, and BOE also didn’t take any stand regarding this publicly.

Earlier this year, in March, the ITC declared that BOE had infringed Samsung’s three OLED patents. However, a few months later, in July, BOE was declared the culprit as the ITC’s preliminary decision found that it had misused Samsung’s trade secrets and recommended a ban on BOE exporting OLED panels to the US for about 15 years.

Now with the new treaty, Samsung Display and BOE appear to have asked the ITC to dismiss the case; however, the ITC has yet to approve the request. It will be interesting to see whether the legal battle between these two firms will end here.
