Samsung is working on a new S-Pen technology similar to Apple Pencil

Samsung is aggressively working on making next-generation foldable phones slimmer by applying a new technology that allows pen input without a digitizer.

Samsung Electronics is looking forward to ditching a digitizer in its upcoming foldable phone to make it slimmer. The digitizer plays an essential role in enabling pen input on Galaxy foldable phones, but now the company is planning to apply new technology that will reduce thickness.

According to the report by Etnews, Samsung is considering adopting pen input technology that does not require a digitizer for its forthcoming foldable phone, the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Reportedly, the company could not install the digitizer, something it has already done on the Galaxy Z Fold SE, which is 12% thinner than the Galaxy Z Fold 6.

To reduce the thickness, Samsung is working on a new S-Pen technology similar to Apple Pencil, which uses static electricity that allows it to be both slim and have pen input. For so long, Samsung has been stuck to EMR technology for its S Pen, which creates an electric field on the display for pen input.

Whereas its rival brand, Apple, uses AES technology, which allows the pen to generate its electricity. Although it needs a battery in the pen that makes it thicker but allows for a thinner device overall. This hints that Samsung prioritizes a thinner pen; meanwhile, Apple’s priority is to make a thinner device. It remains to be seen exactly how Samsung will implement this new technology and whether it will result in thinner foldable devices.
