Samsung’s Project Moohan Offers First Glimpse at an Android-Powered XR Future

Samsung at the Galaxy Unpacked showcases its very first XR headset, and now the first hands-on video of the headset has been published. Let’s take a closer look at its major hardware and software features.

The Korean tech giant didn’t offer a closer look at the XR headset at the event, and now a popular tech YouTuber, Marques Brownlee (MKBHD), was given first access to try out Samsung’s first XR headset prototype, Project Moohan.

Samsung XR Headset: Design and Features

MKBHD revealed that Samsung’s headset is based on Android XR and features Gemini AI and Circle to Search. The company has built it with mixed materials, including metal, glass, plastic, and fabrics.

Samsung placed at least eight front-facing cameras and two eye-tracing cameras on the inside. You can easily cover the cameras with a faceplate to reduce incoming light. It also features a power button, a volume rocker on the top, a touchpad on the right side, and an external battery pack using a USB Type-C power connector.

You can adjust the fit using the dial on the back of the device, and once you wear the device, it automatically detects the user’s eyes and automatically adjusts the lenses for optimal sharpness.

It lets you control everything using your hands and fingers, a single pinch using the index finger and the thumb to open the app launch, which has all the popular Google apps available on Android devices.

The headset supports wireless peripherals like Bluetooth keyboards and mice and apps on the Google Play store. It allows you to arrange app windows side by side, resize them, and drag them around your virtual desktop, or you can just ask Gemini to do that for you.

Samsung XR Headset: Pricing and Launch

Samsung is looking forward to launching the XR Headset sometime by the end of this year. Reportedly, it could debut alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Galaxy Z Fold 7 in the early second half.

The official price has yet to be disclosed, but it could be around $2,000, which is affordable as compared to Apple’s Vision Pro.

The full video is available below, but be careful: this is only a first taste of Project Moohan, which could still undergo important changes before it arrives on the market.
