Galaxy Z Flip 3 Folding Test: folds and unfolds 420,000 times and still working

On 5th June, a YouTuber named Mrkeybrd uploaded a video on youtube titled,” How Many Times Can a Samsung Z Flip 3 Fold Before It Breaks?” 

It all started with a video with the tag #TheGreatFoldingTest. The user started flipping the Galaxy Z Flip 3 with the introductory video and shifted it to Livestream on 8th June. He then invites several people to flip the phone twice a second continuously.

“Even if you open and close the device 100 times a day, you can use it for more than 11 years, and if you do it 200 times, you can use it for five and a half years,” he said based on consumer’s feedback.

To test this theory and also in response to many users complaining about the cracking and malfunction in the display of Galaxy Z Flip 3, he conducted a test that used a machine similar to Squaretrade Fold Bot and Samsung’s foldable devices for doing 80000 flips counts.

But eventually, he ditched the original plan and decided that every 2 hours, a new person would flip the phone and count it. After this, he went to live stream and ended on 13th June with a count of 418500 counts.

In between, these people dip the device in muddy waters and throw dirt & sand at the device to replicate the beach conditions.

After 352,000 times phone became a little loose at the hinge but continued till 418500 counts, then dropped it on the floor to perform the ‘drop test’ 16 times, resulting in cracking the exterior and partially lifting the hinge, but the phone still worked.

After about 142 hours and 30 minutes test ended with 418,506 flip counts with the Galaxy Z Flip 3, the hideaway hinge made little noise but still responded to the touch, and the screen turned on fine with minor scratches.

This test was unique and was way fun to test the durability and endurance of the phone. Samsung did a commendable job with its flagship smartphone.

Samsung officially says the Z Flip 3 is 200,000 folds certified by Bureau Veritas.

Samsung Galaxy AI Stands Alone as Apple Intelligence Lacks Presence in Europe

Apple announced at its WWDC 2024 event a bundle of AI-powered tools coming with iOS 18 for its Apple devices. Now that it has officially been revealed that it is not bringing Apple Intelligence features to nearly 450 million people in the EU, this means that Samsung Galaxy AI will be more prioritized in European markets. 

Apple Confirms Apple Intelligence Absence for 450 Million in EU

The report says that Apple is delaying the launch of its new AI-powered tools, titled Apple Intelligence, in the European Union. The reason behind this delay seems to be concerns regarding complying with the Digital Markets Act (DMA). This act aspires to boost competition in the tech industry and has already pushed Apple to make changes, for instance, by adopting USB-C charging ports and potentially permitting alternative app stores. This pointed out that approximately half a billion EU users will not receive Apple Intelligence for now. 

The Korean brand Samsung is playing the lead role in European markets since it already made its Galaxy AI features available to European Galaxy users with the One UI 6.1 update. Now again, the giant is launching next gen Galaxy AI with the upcoming Galaxy foldables to boost more powerful features than the first generation. Whereas Apple is delaying its AI features, titled Apple Intelligence in Europe for the iPhone 16, this could be a great chance for Samsung’s foldable sales compared to its rival Apple. 

Regarding this, the brand stated, “We are concerned that the interoperability requirements of the DMA could force us to compromise the integrity of our products in ways that risk user privacy and data security.” However, another report from the Financial Times says that Apple said this would not be a lifelong policy. 

Apple believes in complying with the DMA and might need to open this AI to rivals such as Android, making it less profitable. Noticeably, the two other features launched at WWDC, including iPhone mirroring and SharePlay screen sharing, will also apparently not land in the EU. It has yet to be clear that these features could be negatively impacted by the DMA. This report will be an efficient issue for iPhone, iPad, and Mac users in the EU. Remember: the second half of Apple’s entire WWDC keynote was dedicated to Apple AI.

Google Pixel 10 could have a powerful CPU but not from Samsung

Google is ditching Samsung! Samsung and TSMC are the two competitors rivaling to be able to snatch the most important customers from the opponent, undoubtedly, which is Google. Google is expected to offer a powerful CPU in collaboration with TSMC for Pixel 10 devices. 

Google has long powered its Pixel devices with the Google Tensor, which is a system-on-chip processor designed in collaboration with Google and Samsung. Pixel 10 to Feature High-Performance CPU from TSMC

It’s reported that Google has decided to rely on TSMC for its processor with 3nm technology. The reason behind this sudden change is that Samsung has encountered problems in its production process, due to which the chips are not able to guarantee the desired performance and consume more energy than expected. 

Google’s Pixel smartphones deliver excellent software systems and great camera specs, but jumping on their hardware has been below expectations for so long since it overheats. Overheating is the key reason Google is shifting towards TSMC for the next-generation processors. Reportedly, seven major brands, including NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, Qualcomm, MediaTek, Apple, and Google, have already decided to focus on TSMC’s 3nm technology, which, with Tensor G4 (the CPU of the Google Pixel 9 series), should stop collaborating with Samsung after a manufacturing project that has been going on for several years. 

Google will use its Google Tensor G5 processor to power its Google Pixel 10 series, which will be able to integrate with TSMC’s 3nm technology, and this means that users should be able to count on devices capable of better managing heat and resources without sacrificing performance. Once this new collaboration comes into existence, overheating will not be the case for Google Pixel devices any longer.

Samsung Loses 3nm Chip Orders to TSMC for Google and Qualcomm

Samsung Electronics’ chip manufacturing division is struggling hard with building well-organized 3nm chips. This forced major customers like Google and Qualcomm to shift to Samsung’s rival, TSMC, for their next-generation processors. 

The South Korean media reported that TSMC has just secured orders from Google and Qualcomm for next-gen 3nm because Samsung Foundry is having issues with yield and power efficiency. The new report from Business Korea suggests that most firms will deal out tier orders to TSMC for next-gen 3nm chip designs. As of today, 7 huge brands are using TSMC for 3nm designs, including NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, Apple, Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Google, which are focused on looking forward to the use of TSMC’s 3nm manufacturing process.

Google is shifting to TSMC to make their next-generation Pixel phone processor because Samsung Foundry is having problems with its 3nm chip technology. Meanwhile, Samsung Foundry is facing multiple issues, such as their 3nm chips (SF3E) having a lower yield and being less power efficient than expected, and it is also struggling to catch up to TSMC’s dominance. Google will use TSMC to make their next-gen Tensor G5 processor for Pixel 10 phones, maybe because TSMC’s 3nm technology is performing better. 

Noticeably, the Korean brand was the one that announced 3nm mass production back in 2022 for the first time. Apart from this, the next-gen Exynos 2500 processor that was developed by Samsung System LSI Division and produced through its in-house Samsung Foundry 3nm process is also reported to have “disappointing yields,” reports Business Korea. 

It is reported that TSMC holds a foundry market share of around 61.7% as it stands, with Samsung Foundry dropping to just 11% in the first quarter of the year. The representative also pointed out a few issues in heat management and stated that “heat issues in semiconductors have been a longstanding challenge for leading chip manufacturers over the past 20 years, but it has become a crucial issue with the onset of the AI semiconductor era. In mobile chips, heat issues can compromise the entire structure of smartphones, and for server chips, the heat generated by one server rack can spread like wildfire, potentially causing overload across the entire server.”.
