Samsung Gains 23 Patents For ‘Self-Record’ From Seagate in the USA

The Korean brand ‘Samsung’ announced that recently it bought 23 patents related to magnetic recording technology from Seagate. 

The giant sold its own HDD business and patents to Seagate 13 years ago, and now it is acquiring specific magnetic recording patents instead of ones it previously owned. The patents are possibly for data storage advancements, potentially for use in Samsung’s memory or storage products. 

The aim behind the purchase is yet to be debated; some have speculated that Samsung probably uses these patents to upgrade its in-memory computing technology, whereas others are expecting that it’s simply to cut ties with Seagate after their previous business dealings. It has become known that most of the acquired patents are from 2002–2020, and four have already expired. 

Back in 2011, Samsung sold its hard disk drive (HDD) business and a total of 479 patents to Seagate, and this was part of a major deal that pointed to various twerks; for instance, the Korean giant getting some of Seagate’s stock, collaboration on future storage solutions, Seagate providing HDDs for Galaxy devices, and many more. Later, in 2016, the Korean giant sold all of its Seagate stock. 

Now the reports are saying that Samsung has bought 23 patents related to magnetic recording technology from Seagate. Some experts are saying that Samsung could use magnetic recording patents to develop MRAM-based in-memory computing technology, which is a powerful memory type with advantages for AI chips. At the moment, the exact reason behind this step is not clear. 

An industry insider released a statement: “It may be an attempt by Samsung Electronics to settle the remaining business relationship after selling its stake in Seagate in the past, or it may be a kind of fake patent purchase strategy to deceive competitors.”

Samsung Self-Repair Program Discontinued by iFixit Over Accessibility Issues

Samsung partnered with iFixit a couple of years ago and introduced a self-repair scheme in the US as an alternative to Apple’s program. This program is known for its repair guides, which make the program user-friendly. 

Now iFixit has decided to step back from collaborating with Samsung on this program. It is expected that Self-Repiar will live on with another partner, but iFixit will no longer play a role in it. iFixit has made some crucial claims regarding ‘obstacles’ from Samsung that prevented it from achieving the objective; however, the Korean brand has not responded yet. 

Regarding this decision, iFixit stated that even after its best efforts, it has not been able to deliver on the promise of offering independent repair shops with the tools and parts they require. The brand also depresses the point that it has continued going through a hard, challenging face that has made it “doubt Samsung’s commitment” to make repairs more accessible for customers. 

Samsung’s Self-Repair program faced various challenges; for instance, spare parts were difficult and expensive for repair shops to obtain; high part prices made repair costly as compared to replacing the device; and Samsung’s glued-together phone design raised repair difficulty and cost. iFixit also claims that the design of Samsung’s Galaxy devices is “frustratingly glued together,” forcing the brand to sell batteries and screens in pre-glued bundles that repair costs. 

In the end, iFixit says that it has ended its partnership with Samsung, saying that the Korean giant’s progress towards repairability doesn’t align with its mission. Starting next month, iFixit will cease to be an authorized third-party parts and tool distributor for Samsung. 

However, Samsung has not commented on the situation, but a response is expected due to the seriousness of iFixit’s claims.

Samsung Leads European Smartphone Market in Q1 2024

Samsung never fails to maintain its legacy of leading the tech market. This is what new reports are proving, since in Europe, the company managed to widen the gap between itself and its rival Apple.

If the latest metrics from Counterpoint Research are to be believed, Samsung was the biggest smartphone brand in Q1 2024. Its market share was 32%, and its sales increased by 7% in the first quarter of this year as compared to the first of last year (Q1 2023). However, somewhere, the Galaxy S24 series is the key reason behind the increment in sales since it was already reported that within a few days after its launch, the Galaxy S24 broke its predecessor’s Galaxy S23 series’ sales record. 

While its sales volume increase was not as good as the overall sales rise in the European market, which was at 10%, For the first time in two years, the South Korean firm regained its number one position in central and eastern European regions from Xiaomi. Apple scored a 25% share of the European smartphone market, two percentage points lower than last year. This means that iPhone sales decreased this year. Not only this, but iPhone sales are also expected to continue dropping until the launch of the iPhone 16 in Q4 2024. 

Xiaomi’s sales increased by 11% over 2023, and its overall market share in the European smartphone market earned 18%. Honor and Realme were the brands that showed the highest growth, and noticeably, Honor’s sales increased by 67% to reach a market share of 4%, whereas Reamle’s sales rose by 59% to reach a market share of 4%.

Samsung Knox Enhances Security to Curb AI Misuse

Transparently, Samsung is now dedicatedly focusing on AI security, and ethics are gaining traction. The reason behind this seems to be their chairman’s emphasis on responsible AI use. 

This suggests a growing trend within Samsung to get well-off and upgrade products and services that prioritize AI safety and ethical considerations. On May 22, industry sources reported that during the AI Seoul Summit held virtually on May 21, Lee Jae-young stated, “It is crucial to responsibly utilize the advantages of AI technology.” 

He also added, “Globally, there must be discussions on how to minimize the misuse of AI and maximize its benefits during the innovation process.” This meeting followed up on discussions from the AI Safety Summit held in Bletchley Park in the U.K. in November 2023 and was the second meeting co-hosted by South Korea and the U.K. 

Crimes using AI—for instance, breaches of personal information, corporate data theft, and financial sector hacking—are increasing globally, and now Samsung Electronics has been actively focusing attention on the safety of its AI products and services. The company is looking forward to preventing customer attrition in the AI market by increasing consumer trust. 

Currently, Samsung has debuted the application of its security solution “Knox” to “Family Care,” which was revealed at its Suwon site. Samsung’s AI home appliances are connected through an integrated SmartThings platform and have improved security because of privacy concerns. During the Bespoke AI Media Day in April, the incorporation of Knox into each home appliance was heavily emphasized. Vice Chairman Han Jin-hee stated, “The core of Bespoke AI is trustworthy security,” adding, “We prioritize security so that consumers can use our products with confidence.”
