Corning’s New Gorilla Glass 7i: Durability for Budget-Friendly Smartphones
Corning is expanding its Gorilla Glass family by launching a new Gorilla Glass 7i, which will add an extra layer of protection over your mid-range smartphone’s display.
Four years ago, Corning debuted Gorilla Glass Victus to power the panels of high-end smartphones. Now the brand is looking forward to expanding its reach to mid-range devices by introducing its seventh-generation glass, called Gorilla Glass 7i. Although Corning claims that Goriall Galss 7i is indeed part of the same Gorilla Glass lineage as Victus,.
The “i” here stands for “industry-leading innovation for intermediate devices,” which suggests its focus on protecting mid-range smartphones. The brand stated that Gorilla Glass 7i can survive drops up to 1 meter high on rough surfaces, for instance, asphalt, while comparable alternatives can withstand drops up to half that height.
Moreover, Gorilla Glass 7i would be twice as resistant to scratches as competing solutions. Since this solution was designed to be appropriate for devices in a wide price range, the brand also took sustainability into account, and the key reason behind this is just to keep production costs down and appeal to mid-range manufacturers.
Presently, several smartphones are protected by Gorilla Glass 5; for instance, the Nothing Phone (2a) and POCO F6 Pro. Some smartphones even use Gorilla Glass 3, such as the Google Pixel 8a. In order to boost the quality and size of displays in mid-range phones, Corning developed the Gorilla Glass 7i. This new solution will provide modern protection for affordable devices, even those under budget.
Corning announced that OPPO will be the first brand to present a smartphone with Gorilla Glass 7i. Noticeably, the solution is also appropriate for smartwatches and other devices that need resistance to scratches and drops.
