Samsung Devices Won’t Get Access to This New Gemini Feature

Google added an extra layer of upgrade to its TalkBack by offering AI-powered image description features. Samsung Galaxy users will miss this feature as it is not compatible with the Galaxy smartphones.

TalkBack is a screen reader pre-installed application available on most Android devices, except Samsung Galaxy devices running One UI skin. Now, Google is adding a new novelty that will offer AI-powered image descriptions.

The reason a Galaxy device lacks this feature is that Samsung offers its dedicated accessibility tools, such as a custom TalkBack service. Google permits device manufacturers to skip pre-installing the Android Accessibility Suite in case they offer alternative accessibility tools that meet particular standards.

The TalkBack service is preloaded and available on Galaxy devices running One UI and has almost all the features available in Google’s version provided through the Android Accessibility Suite app. However, Samsung’s TalkBack is similar to Google’s, despite the fact the fact that it is a separate app updated through the Galaxy Store instead of the Play Store.

Google’s TalkBack is not compatible with Galaxy smartphones since the pre-installed Talkback service is already available on them. In case users install Google’s version, then the Galaxy device will automatically override it. The entire controversy results in that, at least for now, Galaxy devices cannot benefit from Google’s new AI-powered image description in TalkBack. The new AI-powered image description feature will be compatible with most other Android smartphones that run at least Android 11 and later.

However, Samsung has yet to release any official announcement on whether to offer this new AI-powered image description feature; it will update its own TalkBack screen reader service. It’s expected that it will, though whether it might leverage Google’s Gemini AI or another AI model is up in the air.
