Samsung Messages App May Be Removed from Older Galaxy Devices

Recently, Samsung changed its ritual by ditching its Samsung Messages, making Google Messages a default messaging app, but for some latest Galaxy devices. Now the same changes started appearing on older Galaxy devices.

Samsung is looking forward to expanding its transition from Samsung Messages to the Google Messages app as a default messaging app. Initially, this change was limited to new devices; this change is now expected to extend to older Galaxy devices as well. This suggests that Google Messages will become the default texting app on more Samsung devices.

A few users on Reddit and Threads reported (Via Android Authority) that they are being prompted to switch to Google Messages as the default texting application on their older phones, including the Galaxy S20 Ultra, Galaxy S21 Ultra, and Galaxy S22 Plus.

Google Messages will replace Samsung Messages

However, users still have the option to keep Samsung Messages. The prompt is evidence that Samsung is prioritizing Google Messages as the preferred texting application for its devices. This change arrived after the company shifted to Google Messages as the default preloaded texting app on new phones. Initially, this new change applied to the Galaxy Z Flip 6, Galaxy Z Fold 6, and newer devices. Notably, users could still download Samsung Messages from the Galaxy Store.

The reason behind this move as it will accelerate the adoption of the RCS standard, which picks up where SMS left off. Samsung Messages supports RCS if the device’s carrier supports it; meanwhile, Google Messages supports RCS despite the carrier.
