Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra Could Drop the 3x Camera, and Most People Are Fine With It

Samsung barely finished announcing the Galaxy S26 series before leaks about the S27 Ultra started circulating. That is just how the phone industry works now. But one particular detail from tipster Ice Universe is worth paying attention to, because it signals a real shift in how Samsung thinks about zoom.

The claim: the 3x telephoto lens is being cut from the S27 Ultra. Ice Universe shared this on Weibo and X, putting the probability at 100%, which is a bold number for something this far from launch. Take that figure with appropriate skepticism. Still, the direction itself makes sense.

The 3x lens has always been the awkward middle option. It sits between the main camera and the 5x telephoto without doing either job particularly well. Its sensor is smaller, its low-light performance trails the competition, and most users skip it entirely once they have spent time with the 5x. Removing it is less of a sacrifice than it sounds.

What matters more is what reportedly replaces that attention. Ice Universe suggests Samsung is preparing a wider aperture for the 5x lens, a new ultrawide sensor, and a possible variable aperture main camera. If accurate, that is a focused upgrade rather than a spec-sheet shuffle.

The front camera is also reportedly getting a rework, which would be welcome. The selfie camera on Samsung flagships has lagged behind its rear system for a while.

None of this is confirmed, and a lot can change before the S27 Ultra arrives. But the early signal is clear: Samsung seems ready to prioritize fewer, better cameras over a long list of zoom options that most people never fully use.
