Samsung electronics will likely forsake its smartphone processors in favor of Qualcomm Snapdragon chips, the most recent challenge to the company’s capacity to plan and make cutting-edge processors. A few examiners and industry insiders anticipate that for the upcoming Galaxy S23 series early next year, the company has chosen Taiwan’s TSMC’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 rather than Samsung’s Exynos 2300 new chip line. The finest within the central chip line for the Galaxy smartphones since 2011.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 vs Exynos 2300

Qualcomm will likely be the “sole processor provider” for the Galaxy S23 models due to the Exynos 2300’s silent execution for the Galaxy S23 series. No details about the Exynos 2300 are available compared to SD Gen 2.

The Exynos branded chips are outlined by a division called System LSI and made by Samsung Foundry. Still much better than the previous failed attempt of combining the two. Qualcomm has chosen TSMC over Samsung Electronics to produce its latest chipset after the disappointing results of the Exynos SoC by Samsung.

Samsung’s big problem in manufacturing has been its reduced production capacity, especially after using new technology based on the ultraviolet (EUV) wavelength range. i.e., the yield rate is the number of silicon wafers successfully processed into a mold, which is packaged into a semiconductor. The lower the output, the less product is produced. Semiconductor experts believe that meager yields can affect chip quality and manufacturing costs, as they indicate that a manufacturing process is having trouble making chips that match the customer’s design.

Problems with the previous devices using Exynos

Both the Galaxy S21 and S22 models experienced complaints of overheating and slower-than-expected processing speeds. The S21 series is powered by Exynos 2100 and Snapdragon 888, and the S22 by Exynos 2200 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. If we go by benchmarking tools like Geekbench, Galaxy phones using Exynos show lower average processor speed scores than the same Galaxy model with a Snapdragon chip.

The poor performance of  Exynos chips has recently led Samsung Electronics to increase the number of Snapdragon-powered Galaxy S models gradually.

Strategy for The Future;

In response to recent setbacks, Samsung Electronics is trying to revamp its smartphone business and chipmaking.

The tech giant also recently formed a dedicated team to improve the performance of a smartphone’s central processor, Task Force.

Samsung Electronics’ smartphone business suggested that the company plans to produce the central processor exclusively for Galaxy models. Also, the Exynos chips are not explicitly customized for Galaxy as they are supplied to Chinese vendors.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Coming

Following along the lines, we can connect the dots, especially when Qualcomm has uncovered that it’ll hold its yearly occasion, the Snapdragon Summit 2022, from November 15 to November 17 in Hawaii. This event is where the company will showcase the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor.
