Samsung Secures 53 US Patents for Quantum Dot Display Technology

Samsung Electronics has secured 53 US quantum dot (QD) patents from Merck Patent to use for QD-electroluminescence (EL), a self-luminous inorganic display technology, which helps the firm compete with Chinese QLED TVs.

According to a new report from TheElec, Samsung has acquired 53 US patents and 15 Korean patents regarding quantum dot (QD) technology, which marks a new phase in the company’s strategy since its subsidiary, Samsung Display, had previously acquired patents from Merck.

The key aim behind the acquisition is to strengthen Samsung’s position in the high-end display industry. The company will use these patents for existing products, for instance, QLED TVs and QD-OLED TVs, and also for future technologies, like QD-electroluminescence (EL).

The QD-electroluminescence is a self-luminous inorganic display technology, which is currently under development. This new strategy will be in favor of Samsung to compete more effectively with Chinese TV manufacturers that use QLED technology.

This year, in the US, from February to July, Samsung bought 53 patents from Merck Patent. However, during 2022 and 2024, its display subsidiary has purchased 5 patents in the country. Noticeably, the patents are linked to some essential patents for cadmium-free QD tech.

It seems that these patents will be significant for Samsung to stand strong against its Chinese rivals in the country and around the world.
