Samsung begins mass production of its 4th gen 4nm process, SF4X

Samsung Electronics is making room for more advancements within its foundry business. It’s substantially looking forward to expanding its 4nm process technology, which will be entering into the 4th generation, with the mass production already in process, says reports.

While the company started its first-ever 4nm process mechanism back in 2021, Samsung’s 4th generation 4nm process technology is basically designed for high-performance computing and supports AI functionalities and other essential applications.

Named SF4X, the company’s Foundry Division revealed that this newest 4th-gen technology’s mass production has already begun in November 2024, while Samsung Electronics is significantly aiming for its foundry business expansion as the new SF4X is expected to play a crucial role, and also such companies are currently in high demand who manufacture AI-based semiconductors.

In the meantime, the newest SF4X 4nm process mechanism seems to have a full wiring process called BOEL (Back End of the Line) and some kind of high-speed transistors that help improve performance compared to older generations.

While Samsung is continuously aiming to strengthen its chip business, the company has not performed well under the semiconductor sector. Also, Samsung has failed to get benefits from its major customers, such as Qualcomm, in the advanced foundry market. Well, hopefully, this latest SF4X, which is based on 4nm process technology, will prove to be advantageous to the foundry division.
