Samsung RAM Plus: Does it Really Enhance Your Phone?

Samsung introduced the RAM Plus feature back in 2021, which remains a part of the conflict, as its exact functionality caused a lot of confusion, and actual convenience has yet to come into existence.

The Korean tech giant introduced a feature called RAM Plus for its Galaxy Phones, which intelligently expands memory by using internal storage as virtual RAM, and it also allows for more applications to run in the background and faster app launching, enhancing overall phone performance.

The feature is in controversy now since a few users argue that Samsung hasn’t clearly explained RAM Plus. A few users find advantages of Samsung’s RAM Plus feature, whereas others consider it a ploy. One of the most common misconceptions is that while enabling this feature, it sacrifices internal storage.

Samsung’s RAM Plus does not abstract a portion of the Galaxy smartphone’s internal memory to add more RAM. Regarding this confusion, a post on Reddit is clearing up a few key points that Galaxy users should know.

Users can find the RAM Plus feature by navigating a few easy steps, which are as follows –

  • Settings > Device Care > Memory > RAM Plus

Once you reach the RAM Plus section, it will allow you to choose between several values: 2, 4, 6, 8, or 12 GB, depending on the model. Reportedly, Samsung itself shared a confusing description of RAM Plus is incorrect.

In a real case, RAM Plus utilises a technology called zRAM, which is a Linux module that has been present on Android for a while. It is a kernel module that creates a block in the system RAM where data can be stored with a high compression ratio; for instance, about 2:1, so an app that uses 50 MB of RAM would take up about 25 MB of space. It does not use any internal memory, but administers a part of the system. Noticeably, it does not steal storage space from smartphones. However, disabling the RAM Plus function from the settings does not completely disable this zRAM.
