Samsung’s new patent revealed a modular phone-like design with replaceable lens

Samsung is planning to introduce a new smartphone with a replaceable lens, as a newly filed patent hints at this possibility.

The Korean tech giant is actively working on maintaining its leading legacy in the smartphone market by introducing innovative devices. Now, one of our reliable colleagues, 91Mobiles, revealed that Samsung filed a new patent, which is published by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) with the dedicated number WO/2025/084594.

Samsung Replaceable lens

The patent revealed the new phone design with a replaceable camera lens, which means that the lens assembly is detachable. It will allow you to swap lenses depending on your needs. It is expected that you could have access to several lenses that serve various functions; for instance, zooming, focusing, and stabilisation.

Reportedly, the key part of the replaceable lens mechanism is to be a motor or actuator that would control the movement of the lens or the image sensor itself flawlessly. This movement would allow you to adjust focus or zoom as per your convenience, and it might even offer features such as stabilisation or alignment.

The actuator will be housed on the device’s body, which would simplify the design by not requiring movement in the lens assembly itself, and it’s expected that a few actuators could function independently, allowing for more precise adjustments according to situations like subject distance.

However, currently the design is in patent stage, and there’s no official word regarding this design, so it remains to be seen whether Samsung will use this mechanism for commercial purposes.
