Samsung Eyes Competitive Edge Over Apple with New Wide Fold Concept

Samsung is supposed to launch the eighth-generation foldable phones in the second half of 2026, including the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the ‘wide-fold,’ and now the mockup image of the upcoming wider-fold device has surfaced online.
The Korean tech giant has yet to launch its upcoming Galaxy Tri-Fold phone, which is highly anticipated to debut by the end of this year; meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 foldable model’s leaks and rumors have already started blowing in the market.
Usually, Samsung launches one fold and one flip model at the major summer Galaxy Unpacked event each year; however, that’s not going to be the case for next year, as the company is expected to debut two fold phones.
Recently, it’s been reported that Samsung is looking forward to expanding the foldable family next year by launching a “Wide-Fold” phone, alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 8 & Galaxy Z Flip. Now, a trustworthy tipster, UniverseIce, shared a mockup image of the second foldable model coming next year.

According to the tipster, the second Galaxy Z Fold 8 model could feature a nearly square 18:18 internal display aspect ratio when unfolded and an 18:9 aspect ratio when folded. These figures are different from usual Galaxy Z Fold phones, as they are tall and narrow; for instance, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 has an aspect ratio of 18:20 (width-height).
The leaked 18:18 aspect ratio hints that the new model will look like a square tablet when unfolded. Noticeably, it seems that this design may also resemble what Apple is reportedly targeting for its first foldable iPhone, expected to launch in 2026.
Samsung is considering launching a square-shaped Fold variant as a direct counter to the rival foldable iPhone. However, the official statement regarding the existence of a second Galaxy Z Fold 8 model has yet to be released, so it remains to be seen exactly what will happen next.
