One UI 8.5 Aims for Perfect Theme Consistency Across App Icons

Samsung Galaxy users, get ready for an exciting tweak, as the One UI 8.5 could make all app icons match your smartphone’s theme.

Currently, Samsung’s Good Lock app can help make app icons match your Galaxy phone’s theme, primarily through its Theme Park module, which lets you apply third-party icon packs and customize icons to a degree; however, it doesn’t guarantee all icons will match perfectly due to individual app branding.

It’s no longer the case, since Google announced (via) that it’s making it easier for users to create a consistent and clean home screen by automatically theming app icons to match the system’s color scheme.

Many app developers don’t allow customization of icons, as they want their apps to stand out or preserve their brand identity, which leads to an unorganized look. Now, with the new upgrade, even if developers haven’t provided a themed icon, Android will automatically apply a color filter to existing icons, which makes them blend seamlessly with the phone’s theme.

This change is anticipated to arrive on Galaxy devices with One UI 8.5, as Google has updated its rules for developers. The Google Play Developer Distribution Agreement now orders app developers to allow users to customize the color or theme of their app icons, and this change will take effect immediately for new developers, while for existing ones, it will take effect from October 15, 2025. As Samsung has already started rolling out the stable One UI 8.0 update, this means that it will bring this change with its next major update, which is supposed to be 8.5, for the Galaxy devices.
