Carrier-locked Galaxy S20 FE gets January 2024 security patch in the US

Published

on

Samsung is regularly expanding the January 2024 security patch for its Galaxy devices. Due to carrier limitations, the US-based devices are getting the same update at different times. Now, the Galaxy S20 FE has started getting a new update on the locked variants.

As of writing, the locked variants of the Galaxy S20 FE are spotted on the US Cellular with the firmware G781USQSEHWL2. More carriers are expected to offer the locked variants of Galaxy S20 FE in the coming days. The update includes the January 2024 security patch, which comes with a standard changelog that says it only includes new security patches, so don’t expect any new features or innovations for the device.

More specifically, January 2024 brings a total of 80 fixes for software management; from them, there are 75 issues addressed by Google to make the Android OS less vulnerable. Additionally, 5 more fixes were added by Samsung, which brings some exclusive fixes for the Galaxy devices.

Moreover, suppose you keep your device updated with the latest security patch. In that case, it will always give you the best protection against any security threats or other dangerous malware that can be harmful to your device. To check the latest update for your device, just go to the software update option through the device’s main settings.

The Galaxy S20 FE is the first Galaxy S series Fan Edition device that I designed to provide a flagship-level experience in an affordable range. It was launched back in 2020 with Android 10 preinstalled. Later, it received three major updates: Android 11, Android 12, and Android 13. Now, it is no longer eligible to get any feature-full updates, but it will still get some more minor updates.

  1. Is the January 2024 update also available for the unlocked variants of the Galaxy S20 FE?

Currently, the update is only available in the locked variant of US Cellular.

  2. When will the unlocked variants get the January 2024 security patch?

The update usually expands gradually and depends on carriers, so the update may be available in the coming days.

  3. Has the Galaxy S20 FE also received the update outside the US?

As of writing, the device has only received the update in the US, but it is expected to be available in the next few days.

Earlier this month, Samsung officially announced that it will provide one UI 6.1 update to the 2022 flagship device in May. But now the company has surprisingly started rolling out the update to one of the midrange Galaxy A23 devices.

The Verizon network has spotted the One UI 6.1 update for the Galaxy A23, with the firmware version number A236VSQU3CXD3. It has also brought the latest security update in the form of an April 2024 security patch. With the latest update, there are several new features introduced that will add some new features and enhancements.

In detail, the latest update for the Galaxy A23 5G introduces a new battery protection feature that allows users to manage the application’s battery charging to prevent battery damage. There are some new changes in the clock customization, gallery, and Samsung account sections. It is important to note that there is no AI feature arriving in this update.

The update will also enable call continuity, mid-conversation device switching, and seamless communication across any device, such as a Galaxy table, computer, or watch, all connected to the same Samsung account. A small but important addition is a new toggle in the mobile network that allows users to turn off 5G if they don’t need to connect to the update.

If you are using the locked version of the Galaxy A23 on the Verizon network, then you can now update it to the latest version simply by going to the system settings and tapping on the software update. If it shows a new update available, then tap on the download button.
