Android 15 Could Add Support For Wireless Charging Through NFC

Android 15 is the next big iteration of the Android smartphone industry and is expected to bring an advanced layer of upgrades, improvements, new features, and changes as per the convenience of users. Plus, it is also expected to add support for wireless charging via NFC.

Wireless charging, also called inductive charging, is a way to charge electronic devices without cables, and it is typically handled by the Qi standard. But now it appears that Google is setting up to add overdue support for charging through NFC in Android 15, though it is yet to clear what it may be used for.

In 2020, the NFC standard added official support for limited wireless charging capabilities, allowing the NFC hardware already in the device to transmit power to other devices.

Now, reports say that Android 15 appears to be working on support for NFC wireless charging. This is being speculated as code spotted in Android 15 Beta 1 by a colleague specifically calls out the addition of support for ‘NfC Charging.’

Although this feature is included within Android 15 Beta 1, it is not officially part of the Android Open Source Project. Since a recent consult on NFC charging in AOSP commits, it’s clear that Google is working on this feature. Noticeably, there are limitations to NFC charging (only 1W) as compared to regular Qi chargers.

Although the use of this feature is currently unclear, it will be interesting to see how it operates.
