Samsung Targets Oura Ahead of Galaxy Ring Release in the US

Samsung is setting up to introduce a smart ring and is taking legal steps as it filed a patent against Oura, a Finnish smart ring company, in the US.
The reason behind this lawsuit is just to confirm Samsung’s ring doesn’t infringe on Oura’s patents and possibly invalidate a few of Oura’s patents. Transparently, the Korean giant wants to clear the legal path for its forthcoming product.
On May 29th, the brand the brand filed a lawsuit in a California court against Oura, a Finnish smart ring company. The lawsuit is divided into two parts, which are mentioned below:
- Non-infringement confirmation: The Korean giant wants a court ruling stating their Galaxy Ring doesn’t violate any of Oura’s patents.
- Patent invalidation: The giant also filed with the PTAB to invalidate a few patents of Oura altogether.
The key reason behind taking these steps is just to avoid any future legal issues once we officially introduce the Galaxy Ring. The reason behind this early action is that the patent infringement claims can be based on prototypes or even expo exhibits; for instance, Samsung’s at MWC. Now, Samsung is looking positively to clear the legal path for their product.
Samsung has filed five patents for non-infringement. Patent 429 is for “Method and system for assessing the readiness score of a user.” Patents 178, 179, and 147 are for “wearable computing devices,” and Patent 833 is for “wearable electronic devices and methods for manufacturing thereof.”
The brand has filed invalidation trials on five of the five Oura patents for which it filed non-infringement confirmation lawsuits and another wearable computing device patent. The Galaxy Ring will arrive in 8–9 sizes, similar to Oura but offering more options as compared to some other competitors. The brand will introduce the Galaxy Ring at the next Galaxy Unpacked event on July 10.
