Social media platform X (Formerly Twitter) is adding an extra layer of security as it says goodbye to “like” crises. The likes on a post will no longer be visible.
X has decided to keep all users’ preference data private, regardless of whether they have a premium subscription or not. Now the tons of likes a post receives will no longer be visible. This could reduce the anxiety and competition associated with public-like counts.
The reason behind this change appears to be to reduce negativity and encourage user engagement. This comes after the platform was criticized for exposing politicians and public figures who “liked” inappropriate content. Initially, the brand introduced an option to hide the “Likes” tab as an advantage for X Premium subscribers last year. In a recent tweet, a notification popup and it suggested that the social network will make likes private for everyone by the end of this week.
The new feature eliminates one of the reasons for signing up for a premium subscription since last year the brand’s advertising revenue suffered a rejection, and, to fix its financial crisis, it has introduced two new subscription phases. The Premium+ plan costs $16 per month and removes ads from their timelines, whereas the other is an affordable plan that costs $3 per month; this does not include the site’s blue checkmark.
Apart from this, it could make the platform more secure and safer and a more welcoming place for self-expression. However, it will be interesting to see whether this new twerk will have a positive effect or if it will push more users to consider the multiple subscription plans on offer.
