Samsung looks closer to getting a 12-layer HBM3E chip order from Nvidia

Samsung might have reached the final stage to earn billions of dollars by selling its 12-layer HBM3E chips to Nvidia, which will help the firm regain its leading title. Let’s take a closer look at the complete report.

For decades, Samsung’s foundry was the world’s biggest memory chip supplier, but the last few years have changed the game as its rivals have ruled the market due to its inability to supply fifth-generation high-bandwidth memory (HBM3E) chips to Nvidia, which turns out to be a huge loss in its semiconductor chips division.

For so long, the Korean tech giant was struggling hard to earn Nvidia’s 12-layer HBM3E chipset order, which will be quite significant for the company to stand strong against its rivals. Now, a new report from AlphaBiz Korea revealed that Nvidia recently agreed to buy 12-layer HBM3E chips from Samsung Electronics. Reportedly, Samsung will supply 30,000 to 50,000 units of its new chipset to Nvidia.

According to the report, the 12-layer HBM3E memory chipset will reportedly be used only in water-cooled servers, suggesting that the company hasn’t fully resolved heat-related issues in its chipset; however, Samsung declined to comment on this.

In case you missed it, last year, Samsung launched HBM3E chips, but unfortunately, they didn’t meet Nvidia’s quality standards due to issues regarding the heat generation. Despite even reworking its HBM3E chips, Nvidia refused to approve Samsung’s request. However, a few months back, Nvidia ordered Samsung to supply its 8-layer HBM3E chips, but only in the Chinese market, where Nvidia sells its lower-end H20 AI accelerator.

Since Samsung hasn’t released any official news regarding Nvidia’s approval for 12-layer HBM3E chips, it remains to be seen exactly what will happen next.
