Samsung could bring back Variable Aperture with Galaxy S27 Ultra

Samsung is now anticipated to bring back the “Variable Aperture” camera, potentially with the future Galaxy S27 Ultra, which could be introduced in 2027.
Initially, Samsung introduced the Variable Aperture feature with the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S10 smartphones; however, it later dropped it. The mechanism made the phone thicker and pushed up production costs, forcing the company to lean on software tricks to mimic the effect. However, many users suggest that it doesn’t deliver results as good as a true hardware solution.
On the other hand, Samsung’s rival brand, Apple, is rumored to be considering a variable aperture camera for the 20th anniversary iPhone, which is supposed to debut in 2027. In case you missed it, this technology helps the camera to adjust its opening, offering enhanced low-light performance and greater creative control over depth of field and exposure. This means that to stand strong against its rival, Samsung has to bring this feature back or introduce something more innovative than this.
Meanwhile, a new report from ETNews reveals that an industry source said, “As the smartphone pixel race reaches its technological limit, hardware innovation has become difficult, but variable aperture could mark a new inflection point in smartphone camera technology.”
As already reported, Samsung is working with a Chinese smartphone brand to supply advanced camera components. This could be convenient for Samsung, as reintroducing a variable aperture is easier and less costly. In case Apple goes ahead of its predicted plans, and fortunately, users keep pushing for better cameras, this might force Samsung to bring variable aperture back by 2027.
Since Samsung hasn’t released any official statement regarding this, it remains to be seen what will happen next.
