After dropping it from phones, Samsung brings Bootloader Unlocking via Galaxy XR

Samsung finally introduced its first-ever headsets, which were rumorously named as Project Moohan, but the company gave the official name as the “Galaxy XR”, which runs the Android XR Operating System on top. Despite bearing an interesting price tag of $1,799, there’s another factor that could amaze audiences!

Basically, reports have been flashing since July 2025, and with One UI 8, Samsung has dropped the ability of the Bootloader Unlocking from its Galaxy phones.

Now, guess what! After removing the function from phones, it looks like the company has brought the function back with its Android XR.

Since the ability will allow users to install custom ROMs, according to the reports presented by a user, Brad Lynch on X, via Android Authority, it was discovered that the newly-launched Galaxy XR consists of an OEM unlocking toggle under the Developer Options that will apparently allow the bootloader to be unlocked.

Surprisingly, the OEM unlocking option does work and also lets users actually unlock the bootloader. However, Samsung has already removed the ability to bootloader unlocking on its Galaxy phones and tablets, even from the devices that supported it earlier; several enthusiasts and developers can easily access Android XR.

Well, Samsung has indeed opened an interesting opportunity for custom ROMs and other software-based mods. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen whether Samsung has actually made it possible to unlock the bootloader via its latest Galaxy XR or it’s just a trick that will be fixed with the upcoming software update in the future.
