Samsung is considering bringing its in-house Exynos chipset back for its Ultra variants, starting with the Galaxy S27 Ultra in 2027, according to a new report.
In 2022, Samsung powered the Galaxy S22 series, including the Ultra variant (Galaxy S22 Ultra), with an in-house Exynos 2200 (4nm) chipset in several countries. However, the feedback from users was not satisfactory, as they reported issues like overheating and poor performance.
Then, from the Galaxy S23 series to this year’s Galaxy S25 series, Samsung relied on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon lineup for its Galaxy S series, especially for the Ultra variants. Recently, it’s been reported that the upcoming Galaxy S26 Ultra will also be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset globally.
Meanwhile, a new report claims that relying on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon for the Ultra models will no longer be the case, as Samsung is likely to use the Exynos 2700 to power the Galaxy S27 Ultra.
According to the report, Professor Kim Yong-seok from Gachon University commented: “Improvements in design and production capacity have given Samsung more confidence in Exynos. However, it will only be until 2027 – when the Exynos 2700 is launched – that the chip will be mature enough to equip the Ultra series.” This suggests the Galaxy S27 Ultra could be based on the Exynos 2700 SoC.
Apart from this, the processor also emphasized that expanding the range of Exynos chips will give the company an advantage in price negotiations with Qualcomm, its primary partner.
