Metro 2039 The Stranger in the Moscow Metro facing Hunter’s Novoreich regime

Metro 2039 is the next mainline game in 4A Games’ post-apocalyptic FPS series, published by Deep Silver. It launches February 4, 2027 (February 5 in some Asia-Pacific territories) on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and Microsoft Store. On Xbox it is a Play Anywhere title.

It is the first new main Metro campaign since Metro Exodus (2019). The studio announced it on April 13–16, 2026, then locked the February window at the June Xbox Games Showcase and confirmed the exact date at PlayStation’s State of Play on September 3, 2026, with PS5 Pro footage running at 4K / 60fps with full ray tracing.

Wishlists passed one million within two weeks of the reveal.

The year is 2039

Twenty-five years after nuclear war, Moscow’s survivors still live in the Metro. The old station factions are gone. They sit under one banner: the Novoreich, led by a new Führer — Hunter, the legendary Spartan.

Hunter sells a war for the surface. What he actually runs is propaganda, fear, and a locked underground. The Spartans who once guarded the tunnels are a ruin of that idea.

You play the Stranger, a recluse pulled out of exile by violent waking nightmares and unfinished business. He is the series’ first fully voiced lead. He swore he would never go back down. The story sends him back anyway.

4A wrote the campaign with Dmitry Glukhovsky, author of the Metro novels. It is an original game story, not an adaptation of a single book. Time-skip details vary in coverage (about four to six years after Exodus), but the setting is clear: same world, new lead, darker politics.

The studio has said the war in Ukraine changed the script. 4A was founded in Kyiv in 2005, now works from Kyiv and Malta, and has framed 2039 around the cost of silence, tyranny, and what “peace” under a strongman actually costs.

How it plays

Still a handcrafted, single-player FPS: stealth, survival, exploration, and sudden violence, both in tunnels and on the poisoned surface.

Confirmed or shown so far:

  • Classic Metro kit — filters, the wristwatch, scarce ammo
  • New weapon Shatun and breaching charges
  • New mutant types and environmental routes
  • Psychological horror and diegetic UI, not a loud HUD shooter

Hands-on previews from August 2026 praised sound design, object density, and atmosphere. Pricing and editions are not fully public; a collector’s edition has been teased.

Tech

Built in the in-house 4A Engine, 2039 is the first Metro game designed from the ground up for ray tracing. Steam notes a 60fps Performance Mode with ray tracing. 4A previously pushed RT hard in Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition; this one rebuilds that stack for current consoles and PC.

Artyom is not the playable lead. Whether he appears at all has not been confirmed.

Pre-orders are expected later in 2026. Wishlist it on PlayStation Store, Xbox, Steam, or Epic if you want the next drop of trailers.
