Psyren anime key visual featuring Ageha Yoshina

Psyren anime has arrived. The long-awaited adaptation of Toshiaki Iwashiro’s cult-favorite Weekly Shonen Jump manga premiered October 5, airing in Japan at 11:00 p.m. JST on Tokyo MX, BS11, Sun TV, and other networks, with Crunchyroll streaming the series internationally the same day.

It’s a release fans have waited on for more than 15 years, ever since the manga wrapped its original run back in 2010 without ever getting an anime of its own.

A Story Finally Getting Its Due

Psyren followed high schooler Ageha Yoshina, who finds a mysterious red calling card left behind in a public phone booth, setting off a chain of events that pulls him into a dangerous game tied to a secret organization and a string of unexplained disappearances. The manga ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from December 2007 to November 2010, publishing 16 collected volumes, but was ultimately overshadowed by the magazine’s “Big Three” of One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach, along with contemporaries like Bakuman and Gintama.

Crunchyroll is framing the adaptation as a sci-fi survival thriller, and early coverage has drawn comparisons to Squid Game and Dark for its mix of mystery and high-stakes tension. Production confirmed the anime will adapt the entire manga through to its original conclusion, with Iwashiro himself supervising the scripts.

Cast and Staff Behind the Adaptation

Rikuya Yasuda leads the cast as Ageha Yoshina, with Mayuko Kazama playing opposite him as Sakurako Amamiya. The supporting cast includes Shunsuke Takeuchi as Hiryu Asaga, Soma Saito as Oboro Mochizuki, and Yukihiro Nozuyama as Kabuto Kirisaki.

Katsumi Ono is directing at Satelight, the studio behind Aquarion and Symphogear, with Shin Yoshida handling series composition. Akira Okuma designed the characters, and the score comes from a three-composer team of Takashi Ohmama, Tatsuhiko Saiki, and Shu Kanematsu.

Crunchyroll gave fans an early look before the full premiere, screening the first episode at a Crunchyroll Anime Nights sneak peek event on September 21, two weeks ahead of the official release.
