Squad Is Finally Coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2027
Squad console release is leaving PC exclusivity behind. Offworld Industries and publisher Secret Mode announced during the Galaxies Autumn Showcase on October 15 that the 100-player tactical shooter is heading to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2027, with a free PS5 Alpha Preview running October 16 through 25 for players who want an early look.
The console version keeps the game’s signature scale intact, supporting matches up to 100 players alongside full crossplay with PC through official console servers.
What’s Actually Changing for Console
Squad on console will be a digital-only release, so owning the game on PC won’t carry over a console copy. Offworld Industries has confirmed the underlying gunplay isn’t being altered for the port, though console players will get aim assist, something the PC version doesn’t have.

A new radial menu is also being added specifically for console players without a microphone, giving them a way to communicate with squadmates that doesn’t rely on voice chat. Players will be able to restrict their server browser to their platform of choice, though it’s not yet clear whether that extends to fully console-only matchmaking separate from crossplay servers.
Offworld hasn’t published target resolutions or frame rates for PS5, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S yet, saying only that the console versions will receive “bespoke polish for flawless performance.”
Why Offworld Is Making the Jump Now
In its own announcement, Offworld framed the console expansion as an investment in the game’s future rather than a departure from its PC roots. “PC remains a fundamental part of Squad and of Offworld,” the studio said, adding that console brings a new audience into the existing community while letting the team invest more into the game across every platform, PC included.
It’s a notable move for a title that’s spent its entire decade-long history as a Steam-exclusive release, built around hardcore tactical gameplay that’s historically been considered a tough fit for console controls. Squad isn’t alone in making that bet, though: Arma Reforger has already shown a tactical shooter can work on console, even if its Xbox version has dealt with ongoing performance issues along the way.
The PS5 Alpha, and What Comes After
The free PS5 Alpha Preview runs October 16 through 25, 2026, giving PlayStation owners a hands-on look well ahead of the full 2027 console launch. No Xbox alpha has been announced alongside it. The console reveal lands just two weeks after PC’s own Update 10.6, which overhauled the game’s party system and UI, and which Offworld has spent the time since patching through multiple hotfixes.
Secret Mode, publishing the console version, previously handled Star Wars: Galactic Racer and the console release of horror game Still Wakes the Deep, giving Squad’s console debut a publisher with recent experience bringing PC-built games to PlayStation and Xbox.
