Stranger Than Heaven Platforms Confirmed: RGG Studio Skips PS4 for Current-Gen Only
Stranger Than Heaven platforms are PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and RGG Studio says that’s by design. Producer Hiroyuki Sakamoto told IGN at Gamescom Asia x Thailand Game Show 2026 that the team dropped last-gen hardware like the PS4 so the game could be built natively for current-gen consoles.
Sega’s Like a Dragon prequel is currently listed for a January 15, 2027 release.
Why RGG Studio Left PS4 Behind
Sakamoto described Stranger Than Heaven as a completely new game, built to deliver the best quality the studio can produce right now. That goal ruled out previous-gen support, a first for the team in the PS5 era.
Ever since the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S launched in 2020, RGG’s games have kept one foot in the last generation. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, released in 2024, ran across two generations of PlayStation and Xbox. Earlier this year, Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties dropped Xbox One support but stayed available on PS4. Stranger Than Heaven is the first project to cut both.
What Current-Gen Power Buys
The payoff, according to Sakamoto, shows up on screen. Building around the PS5’s capabilities let the team show more characters at once than ever before and raise the quality of each one. Crowds have long been a signature of the series, so the upgrade matters for the street-level scenes the games are known for.
Combat is also changing. Stranger Than Heaven drops the arcade-style fighting of the Yakuza games for a new system built around grabbing enemies. Players hold both triggers to seize a target and alternate them for one-two combinations. RGG also confirmed optional in-game assists to make the more demanding combat easier to approach.

Stranger Than Heaven is a prequel to the Like a Dragon series. It spans five eras, 1915, 1929, 1943, 1951, and 1965, across five Japanese cities, and follows Daito, the eventual founder of the Tojo Clan. RGG first announced the project at The Game Awards 2024 under the codename Project Century, then revealed the final title in June 2025.
Xbox has confirmed the game for Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Game Pass. Nintendo platforms haven’t been announced, though RGG has a history of bringing games to Nintendo hardware later.
