Samsung is manufacturing a 3-layer QD sheet to help reduce QLED TV cost

Samsung is gearing up to introduce a new QD sheet, which is highly anticipated to make QLED TVs more affordable, as it is simpler and cheaper to produce.

A new report from The Elec revealed that the Korean tech giant is actively working on a QD sheet, which seems to reduce QLED TV cost. Currently, Samsung’s QLED TVs have a five-layer QD sheet, in the order – barrier film – PEET _ QD layer – PET – barrier film.

Now the company is reducing the layers from five to three, for which it is working with Hansol Chemical to develop a QD sheet that has only three layers in order – PEDT – QD layer -PET to simplify the process and reduce the cost of manufacturing a QD sheet.

Due to the lack of barrier films, the QD layer will be exposed to moisture and oxygen. However, to deal with this problem, the company is reportedly looking forward to encapsulating individual QD particles to protect them from moisture and oxygen. The company must use a budget-friendly process for encapsulating individual QD particles to manufacture rather than using barrier films to reap the benefits of developing a technology that gets rid of barrier films.

In case, fortunately, Samsung succeeds at this new tech, this will be quite efficient in reducing the cost of manufacturing QLED TVs. If this happens, then this will help the company to generate a higher profit margin, passing on the cost benefit to customers, and even competing with the Chinese TV manufacturers more fiercely.
